Paper Children - a Lullabye for Mother earth

“Paper Children” (inspired by Hiroshima)
.
The Maker shaped Adam from soft earthly clay,
Then whispered to Eve in the breath of the day.
He filled up the forests with apes and with wings,
And folded the paper to make little things.
.
The paper folk wandered to build a small town,
They called it Hiroshima, with gardens all round.
They laughed with their children, their kimonos bright,
With dragons and flowers and lanterns at night.
.
Hush now, little paper child,
The wind is gentle, the night is mild.
.
Then out of the heavens a strange bird did soar,
Born of the sons Adam fashioned for war.
It laid down an egg and then vanished away,
The shell softly cracked at the break of the day.
.
Beneath the bright yolk, the town disappeared,
The laughter, the lanterns, the voices they feared.
But don’t let your tears in the moonlight drift,
.
Sleep now, little paper child,
The wind is gentle, the night is mild.
Though cities fall and shadows creep,
The stars still hold your name in sleep.
