As I rode across the lands, the world seemed to whisper its secrets to those willing to listen. Then I saw it—a tanuki, clever and quick, sneaking into up to steal eggs from a nest. I saw what it was doing, a creature doing what it must to live. There was no malice, only instinct. A hunger that neither morality nor mercy could quiet.

I stopped to watch, struck by the strange mirror it held before me. How many times have I stolen? How many lives have I taken—not for myself, but for what I told myself was a greater cause? The tanuki’s act was simple, honest. Mine are wrapped in shadows and purpose. I steal from the wicked to restore balance, to protect those who cannot defend themselves. At least, that is what I believe.
