Now that David and his household had fled, Absalom enters Jerusalem and rapes David’s concubines to demonstrate his ascendancy over the king. Ahithophel seeks Absalom’s permission to immediately pursue David. “I will come upon him while he is weary and weak, and make him afraid. And all the people who are with him will flee, and I will strike only the king” (2 Samuel 17:2 NKJV). Hushei, David’s loyal spy in Absalom’s camp, frustrates Ahithophel’s counsel to pursue David and slay him. As a result, David has time to escape from Absalom and finds protection and provisions in Mahanaim.
