Silent No More
(When to Keep Silent — and When to Speak)
Text: Psalms 30:12

Objective: that the brethren speak when needed, with wisdom and understanding

Intro:
Define – silent, keep/hold peace, speak/up
The Bible commands both silence and speaking. A wise Christian must learn when God wants silence and when God wants speech.

Points to Consider

I. THERE IS A TIME TO KEEP SILENT (Ecclesiastes 3:7)
“A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;”
A. Keep Silent to Show Wisdom
Proverbs 17:28 — “Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise...”
Proverbs 10:19 — “In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin...”
Proverbs 11:12 — “A man of understanding holdeth his peace.”
Proverbs 12:23 — “A prudent man concealeth knowledge...”
Proverbs 13:3 — “He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life...”
Proverbs 21:23 — “Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles.”
B. Keep Silent to Avoid Sin and Anger
James 1:19 — “Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.”
Proverbs 14:29 — “He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding...”
C. Keep Silent During Suffering
Psalm 39:1–2 — “I was dumb with silence...”
Lamentations 3:26–28 — “He sitteth alone and keepeth silence...”
D. Keep Silent in Reverence Before God
Psalm 46:10 — “Be still, and know that I am God...”
Habakkuk 2:20 — “Let all the earth keep silence before him.”
Zechariah 2:13 — “Be silent, O all flesh, before the LORD...”
E. Keep Silent in Evil Times
Amos 5:13 — “The prudent shall keep silence in that time...”
F. Keep Silent Like Christ
Isaiah 53:7 — “He opened not his mouth.”
Matthew 27:12–14 — “He answered him to never a word...”
II. THERE IS A TIME TO SPEAK (Ecclesiastes 3:7)
“...a time to speak;”
A. Speak God’s Word Boldly
2 Timothy 4:2 — “Preach the word...”
Acts 4:20 — “We cannot but speak...”
Isaiah 62:1 — “I will not hold my peace...”
Isaiah 62:6 — “Keep not silence.”
B. Speak Praise and Testimony
Psalm 30:12 — “And not be silent...”
Psalm 40:9–10 — “I have not refrained my lips...”
Psalm 107:2 — “Let the redeemed of the LORD say so.”
C. Speak Up for the Voiceless
Proverbs 31:8–9 — “Open thy mouth for the dumb...”
Ezekiel 3:17–18 — “Give them warning from me.”
D. Speak Truth and Defend the Faith
Jude 1:3 — “Earnestly contend for the faith.”
III. HOW TO KNOW WHEN TO SPEAK OR KEEP SILENT
Keep Silent When:
- Words may lead to sin.
- Emotions rise.
- Listening is needed.
- God is speaking.
- Arguing is pointless.
- Suffering requires patience.
Speak When:
- The gospel must be proclaimed.
- Truth must be defended.
- Someone needs a voice.
- God deserves praise.
- Silence would be disobedience.

Message/conclusion:
Let us speak when needed, with wisdom and understanding
Both silence and speech are holy when done in obedience. Ask God for wisdom to know the difference
