On this episode I'm visiting Surfside Beach, SC (Part of the greater Myrtle Beach, SC Area)
I should have just done a live stream from the bar the night before.

Surfside Beach is a small coastal town in Horry County, South Carolina, located approximately eight miles south of Myrtle Beach on a barrier island along the Atlantic Ocean. With a permanent population of around 4,000 that swells significantly during summer months, it is known as “The Family Beach” for its quiet, residential character and emphasis on family-friendly amenities.
The area was first developed in the early 20th century as Floral Beach, a modest collection of vacation cottages. Following World War II, the community grew rapidly and was officially renamed Surfside Beach in the 1950s to highlight its favorable surfing conditions. To preserve its independence and prevent annexation by the expanding Myrtle Beach, residents voted to incorporate the town in 1964, establishing strict building codes that remain in place, including a 65-foot height restriction that prohibits high-rise development.
Surfside Beach endured major natural disasters, most notably Hurricane Hugo in September 1989, which destroyed or heavily damaged nearly all oceanfront structures. Subsequent storms, including hurricanes Matthew (2016) and Ian (2022), repeatedly damaged the town’s signature fishing pier. The original pier, built in the 1950s, burned in 1992 and has been rebuilt several times; the current 900-foot concrete Surfside Pier opened in 2023.
Today Surfside Beach maintains two miles of wide, uncrowded public beach with free parking and access, a rarity along the Grand Strand. The town permits golf carts on most streets under the longstanding “Surfside Beach Rule,” hosts an annual barbecue festival, and attracts repeat visitors seeking a relaxed alternative to the commercial intensity of nearby Myrtle Beach.
