Fraud & Lies in the World of Books

It is insane, the amount of people who set out to fleece other people out of their hard-earned money.

In my time as an unknown author, I’ve had amazing experiences with book bloggers who read and promote books, simply for the love of reading.

This post isn’t about those kind, giving people.

This is about the flip-side, there are (unfortunately) so many scammers who offer to promote your work…

…for a fee.

Which, I suppose would be fine, if they were power brokers, and could move the needle for you.

But over 90% of them can’t.

They can just put your name on a list, and blast it to a list of people who will delete the email unread.

It used to be, there were only a handful of these scammers.

Now it’s a cottage industry.

I’ve read the stories of people who fall for the lies; authors who have spent money to be a part of a book fair with no attendees, or paid a fee and gotten a silly video they could’ve made themselves on Canva.

We’re all desperate to get our work out there, that sometimes it’s easy to take advantage of us.
