Covenant Violations, Disobedience to God’s Word
In the Heavenly Court, covenant (contract) is the highest legal framework that God has established with humanity. Every blessing, protection, and inheritance is tied to covenant alignment. Likewise, every curse, breach, or demonic legal claim is rooted in covenant violation.
We have seen that curses do not arise randomly (Prov. 26:2). They are triggered when a contract is broken, when spiritual jurisdiction shifts, or when the adversary gains the right to prosecute you based on disobedience. Scripture shows three foundational ways covenant is violated:
• Breaking Vows or Oaths Made Before God
(Deuteronomy 23:21–23; Ecclesiastes 5:4–6)
In the Kingdom of God, words are legal instruments. It is a binding covenant declaration recorded in the Heavenly Court. Think of Genesis 1, all creation was given binding terms and conditions every time we read “God said”. When a person makes a vow to God and fails to fulfill it, Scripture says:
• “When thou shalt vow a vow unto the Lord thy God, thou shalt not slack to pay it: for the Lord thy God will surely require it of thee; and it would be sin in thee.” (Deut 23:21)
• “Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay.” (Eccl. 5:5)
A broken vow opens the door for the works of your hands to be frustrated, this is legal language for a curse on labor, finances, or fruitfulness.
Examples of vow-based curses today include:
• Promising God you will change, serve, give, stop a sin, and refusing to follow through
• Marriage vows violated
• Business agreements broken dishonestly
• “If You get me out of this, Lord…” vows never honored
• Ministry promises abandoned
• Sworn oaths spoken in anger or manipulation
Because God is a witness to every vow, breaking one creates a breach in spiritual protection, which the enemy exploits as a legal claim.
Mal 2:13-15
“This is another thing you do: you cover the altar of the Lord with tears, with weeping and with groaning, because He no longer regards the offering or accepts it with favor from your hand. “Yet you say, ‘For what reason?’ Because the Lord has been a witness between you and the wife of your youth, against whom you have dealt treacherously, though she is your companion and your wife by covenant.”
• Failure to Keep the Covenant
(Deuteronomy 28:15–68)
Deuteronomy 28 is the master legal document outlining contract blessings vs. contract curses.
God says:
• “If you diligently obey… these blessings will overtake you.”
• “But if you do not obey… these curses will come upon you and overtake you.”
Notice the language: “overtake”, legal enforcement. Failure to keep God’s covenant does not simply disappoint God; it activates a different legal jurisdiction:
Obedience → God’s jurisdiction → blessing
Disobedience → Satan’s jurisdiction → curse
Curses listed include:
• Confusion and frustration (v. 20)
• Sickness and disease (v. 21–22, 27–28, 35, 59–61)
• Defeat before enemies (v. 25)
• Economic collapse (v. 29–33)
• Mental anguish (v. 28, 34)
• Marital/family breakdown (v. 30–32, 41)
• Personal bondage or captivity (v. 41, 48, 68)
Every curse in the chapter represents a legal penalty for covenant breach, a spiritual contract the enemy enforces until the blood of Jesus voids the claim (Col. 2:13-14).
Col 2:13-15
…”He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions, 14 having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.”
This does not mean every hardship is a curse, but it does mean persistent patterns of destruction, barrenness, or oppression are often legal, not random.
• Trusting in the Flesh Rather Than God
(Jeremiah 17:5–6)
This is one of the most overlooked covenant violations. How often do we hear the positive affirmations, self talk and ‘believe in yourself’ teachings? That all sounds so uplifting, when in fact they are all a violation of trust in God. He tells us clearly that we are to fully rely on Him alone.
Prov 3:5-6
Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
God Himself declares:
“Cursed is the man who trusts in man, who makes flesh his strength, and whose heart departs from the LORD.” (Jer. 17:5)
Trust is a covenantal act. Where you place your trust determines which kingdom you legally align with.
Trust in human strength → curse
Trust in God → blessing (Jer. 17:7–8)
To trust in man means:
• Depending on human wisdom instead of God’s Word
• Leaning on your own understanding (Prov. 3:5–6)
• Trusting money, systems, or connections as your security
• Making decisions out of fear, self-protection, or self-reliance
• Putting confidence in leaders, prophets, or institutions over God’s voice
• Seeking solutions apart from God’s counsel
This shifts your spiritual jurisdiction from the Kingdom of God to the realm of the flesh, and Jeremiah says the result is:
• Spiritual dryness
• Isolation
• Fruitlessness
• Dwelling in a barren wilderness
Because trust is relational covenant language, misplaced trust is covenant infidelity and therefore invokes legal consequences.
• Putting It All Together: Why These Violations Produce Curses
These three violations share a common thread: they break covenant alignment and invite a rival legal system to take over.
In other words:
• A broken vow gives the enemy a contract to contest your words.
• Covenant disobedience gives him a contract to afflict your life.
• Misplaced trust gives him a contract to frustrate your fruitfulness.
A curse is not an emotional reaction from God, it is a legal transfer of jurisdiction.
When covenant is broken:
• God’s covering lifts
• The adversary gains access
• The Heavenly Court recognizes the breach
• A legal claim is activated
• The curse enforces the consequence
And yet, the moment the believer confesses, repents, and brings the issue under the Blood, the entire contract is canceled (Col. 2:14).
The curse loses its legal standing, and the blessing covenant is restored.
