Your phone can be broken into. I asked Grok about whether someone can break into your phone and the answer is yes. People have been getting into my phone line. They can get into your as well. Here is how and what they can do:
Scammer calls AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, etc., pretends to be you, and says “I broke/lost my phone, please move my number to this new SIM/eSIM.” They already have your name, DOB, last 4 SSN, address, etc. from data breaches.
Scammer (or someone they pay) walks into a corporate store with a fake ID and does the same thing in person. A dishonest employee at a carrier store or authorized retailer does the swap for cash (still happens a lot). Newer phones let you activate an eSIM in seconds online — scammer convinces the carrier to issue one to them remotely. FBI: Over 1,500 SIM-swap complaints in 2024, average victim loss $68,000 (many over $500k).

What you can do about it:
Do all of these with your carrier — takes 5–15 minutes and stops 99 % of swaps.
Tell the carrier to flag your account as high-risk or add a note “customer must be called at this alternate number before any changes.” Turn on eSIM-only or block physical SIM changes if your carrier allows. Switch every important account (bank, email, crypto) to an authenticator app (Google Authenticator, Authy) or hardware key (YubiKey) instead of SMS 2FA.

Bottom line: Yes, anyone with your basic info can hijack your SIM and number in minutes unless you have the carrier PIN/lock turned on. Do it today — once they have your number, it’s usually too late.

Now what if malware or viruses have been put on the phone:
Keylogger / remote-access trojan (e.g., Pegasus, AnyDesk, TeamViewer hijacked) on your computer. They cannot get your txts and calls. No — texts and calls go to your physical SIM, not your computer.

Yes — some advanced spyware can forward texts/calls or read 2FA codes before you see them. Can they bypass the pin? Still No for the SIM-swap itself — they still need the carrier to move the number. Screen-recording or clipboard hijacker.
They can see 2FA codes you type or copy. Still blocked from doing the actual port-out without the PIN.

Key point: A bug on your computer or phone is dangerous (they can steal passwords, 2FA codes, bank logins, etc.), but it does NOT let them bypass the carrier’s port-out PIN or Number Lock.
