Wiring a 2-way switch with an intermediate switch, also known as a three-way switch setup, allows you to control a single light or fixture from multiple locations. This is commonly used in hallways, staircases, or large rooms where you want to be able to turn the lights on or off from different points. Below, I'll explain how to wire a 2-way switch with an intermediate switch:
Before you start, ensure that the power is turned off at the circuit breaker to prevent electrical shock.
Here's a step-by-step guide:
Materials and Tools Needed:
Two 2-way switches (also called three-way switches)
One intermediate switch
Appropriate electrical cables (usually 1.5mm² twin and earth cable)
Screwdrivers
Wire stripper/cutter
Voltage tester
Wiring Steps:
Identify the switches: In a three-way switch setup, you will have two 2-way switches and one intermediate switch. The intermediate switch has four terminals labelled L1, L2, L1' (or L2'), and Common (C).
Position the switches: Determine the positions for your switches. Commonly, you'll have one 2-way switch at one end of the circuit and another 2-way switch at the other end. The intermediate switch will be placed in between them.
Wire the first 2-way switch:
Connect the live (phase) wire to the Common (C) terminal of the first 2-way switch.
Connect the brown (or red) traveller wire to one of the other terminals (L1 or L2) on the first 2-way switch.
Connect the blue (or black) traveller wire to the remaining terminal (L1 or L2) on the first 2-way switch.
Wire the intermediate switch:
Connect one end of the brown (or red) traveler wire to the L1 terminal on the intermediate switch.
Connect one end of the blue (or black) traveler wire to the L2 terminal on the intermediate switch.
Connect the other ends of the brown (or red) and blue (or black) traveler wires to the corresponding terminals on the other side of the intermediate switch (L1' and L2' or vice versa).
Wire the second 2-way switch:
Connect the brown (or red) traveler wire from the intermediate switch to one of the terminals (L1 or L2) on the second 2-way switch.
Connect the blue (or black) traveler wire from the intermediate switch to the remaining terminal (L1 or L2) on the second 2-way switch.
Complete the circuit:
Connect the light fixture's live wire to the Common (C) terminal on the second 2-way switch.
Connect the light fixture's neutral wire to the neutral wires in the electrical box.
Secure all connections: Make sure all wire connections are tight and secure.
Install the switches: Place the switches in their respective electrical boxes and secure them with screws.
Turn on the power: Go to the circuit breaker and turn the power back on.
You should now have a functioning 2-way switch setup with an intermediate switch. You can control the light or fixture from any of the switches in the circuit. Flip any of the switches to test the setup, and the light should turn on or off accordingly.
