The story follows Joe Palooka (Stuart Erwin), a naive, good-hearted farm boy from the country whose father was once a champion boxer. A shady but charismatic boxing manager, Knobby Walsh (Jimmy Durante), discovers Joe's natural punching ability and convinces him to move to the big city to become a professional boxer.
Joe quickly rises through the ranks, but his newfound fame and fortune lead him down a path of excess, mirroring his father's past mistakes. This includes a flirtatious relationship with a glamorous cabaret singer and fortune hunter, Nina Madero (Lupe Vélez), which jeopardizes his relationship with his childhood sweetheart and upsets his protective mother.
