AND WE LET THEM DRIVE BECAUSE .....?
SO, WHO SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO DRIVE?
We're entirely too lenient about who can and who cannot drive.
Operating a motor vehicle is an enormous responsibility. You are in command of thousands upon thousands of pounds of metal, rubber, and glass being propelled at speeds you can barely manage. God help us if you drink while driving.
Our DUI rate is among the highest in the world because it is not treated as the serious and potentially deadly infraction that it is. Punishment often equates to a slap on the wrist even if someone else is injured. Hell, unless somebody actually dies, a DUI is easy enough to soft-pedal through the courts.
I look around me and see how many people out there behind the wheel who belong under the wheels of a car, van, truck or bus. The idiotic manoeuvres they perform stand as testament to a government that hands out drivers licenses like candy at a carnival.
How about entering traffic? Is that so hard? You'd think so.
How about passing in traffic? Is that so hard? You'd think so.
How about coming to a complete stop at a stop sign? Is that so hard? You'd think so.
How about stopping for a red light? Is that so hard? You'd think so.
How about courtesy on the road? Is letting someone into traffic such a bad thing? You'd think so.
How about parking? Is that so hard? You'd think so.
How about using your view mirror before changing lanes or pulling into traffic? Is that so hard? You'd think so.
How about tougher qualifications for a license, tougher punishment for more severe and stupid offences?
How about raising the driving age to 18, a state approved driver's education course before getting a license?
How about any DUI, regardless of how little if any damage was the result, give a 1yr suspension of license?
How about any DUI, involving injury, severe property damage, etc. give a 2yr suspension of license?
How about any DUI repeat offence carrying a minimum of 5 years suspension and 90 days in jail?
How about any DUI involving death or dismemberment carry with it 10~20 years in state prison?
How about cutting the amount of allowable points on all licenses in half ... right away?
How about new driver license holders have a 1' x 1' placard on front and rear of car for 6 months, warning people. All infractions by a probationary driver are doubled in fine and points.
