Deming, NM - The New Mexico State Police is investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened early Saturday morning involving the Deming Police Department.

At around 4:30 a.m., a Deming police officer tried to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle for careless driving, according to state police.

The driver of the vehicle, identified as 32-year-old Kassandra Castro, failed to stop and a pursuit happened.

The pursuit came to an end when the vehicle drove through a barbed wire fence, struck a cable box, and got stuck in a field off Highway 11 at around mile market 31.

When the officer approached the vehicle, Castro was able to get the vehicle unstuck and drove toward the direction of the officer.

The officer then fired at least one round from his weapon, but did not struck Castro with the gunfire, according to New Mexico State Police.

Castro surrendered and was booked into the Luna County Detention Center and is facing Aggravated Assault on a Peace Officer and Aggravated Fleeing on Law Enforcement charges.

Police also said Castro had an outstanding warrant for failure to appear on a charge of dangerous drugs.
