Apache Junction, AZ - Tense bodycam video shows the moment a man opened fire on a group of Apache Junction officers, leading to one’s death earlier this year.

The morning of June 2, Officer Gabriel Facio was shot in the face by 37-year-old Roger Nunez. Officer Facio spent six days in the hospital fighting for his life, but later died from his injuries.

That morning, a driver called 911 to report that a man, identified as Nunez, pointed a gun at him and his son.

“This guy’s over here on freaking Ironwood. I’m headed south on Ironwood, and he’s in a Tesla, flashing his gun. If he’s scared, he needs to know how to handle a gun,” the caller told a 911 dispatcher. “He’s flashing it while my son’s in the damn car. This is ridiculous.”

Bodycam footage shows the moment Nunez was pulled over by one officer.

“Do you have any firearms in the car?” the officer asked. “No,” Nunez replied. “No weapons?” the officer asked again, to which Nunez once again said, “no.”

Suddenly, Nunez pulls a gun out of the glovebox. The officer immediately pulled out his gun, yelling at Nunez to drop the weapon.

“Drop it, drop it!” the officer yells as Nunez gets out of his car. “You’re going to have to shoot me,” Nunez says.

“Hurry up, he’s got a 417 in his hand, and he said I have to shoot him,” the officer radios, calling for backup. “He’s walking away southbound on the sidewalk.”

Nunez continues walking away as several officers yell at him to drop the gun. Three officers used a moving patrol SUV as cover as they attempted to use pepper balls to stop Nunez. However, the less-lethal methods were unsuccessful.

“Put the gun down, put the gun down! Drop the gun!” several officers yell as gunfire erupts. “Shots fired, shots fired.”

Officer Facio was struck in the face by the gunfire, and fellow officers returned fire, causing Nunez to fall on the ground. “Still moving, watch the gun!” one officer yells.

Fellow officers rushed to save Officer Facio, loading him into a patrol vehicle as Nunez was lying on the ground with the gun in his hand.

“Get down!” one officer continues yelling. “You’re going to have to kill me,” Nunez yells back. “I’m going to shoot,” one officer says as he fires a single bullet at Nunez.

Body-cam shows several officers swarming Nunez as he was lying injured on the sidewalk, with the gun just inches away from him.

Nunez was shot in the torso and hospitalized. Once released from the hospital, he was booked into Pinal County jail on one count of first-degree murder.
