This is one of the biggest reasons thyroid issues get dismissed.

In this clip, Dr. Aimee Duffy breaks down the difference between conventional thyroid lab ranges and optimal ranges — and it really highlights why so many patients get missed.

She explains that conventional ranges are based on the average of 95% of people who had their labs drawn in the past year. Those numbers don’t distinguish between healthy individuals, people with symptoms, people on medications, people with underlying conditions, or anyone on thyroid replacement or HRT. It’s population data, not personalized data.

Optimal ranges, on the other hand, come from individuals who actually have healthy thyroid function and match that with symptoms — or the lack of them. It also considers more than TSH alone, since TSH reflects brain signaling, not direct thyroid output.

The result? The ‘healthy’ range is actually much tighter than what conventional labs use. This gap can explain why someone can have symptoms that match thyroid dysfunction, but still be told their labs are normal.

This isn’t about blaming practitioners — it’s about understanding how the system sets its numbers, and why using a deeper, more comprehensive approach can make a huge difference in how people feel.
