To truly understand ourselves and the culture around us, we must understand the traditions, values, belief systems, and external forces that shaped our ancestors. In today’s world, one has only to look at things like architecture, the recipes handed down in families, or the colloquialisms and intricacies in how we communicate to find hidden examples of our collective past informing the present. The arts also eternalize the stories we tell about ourselves, leaving them in a form we can admire and pass on.

For this second episode of our Young Builders series, the two of us traveled to Poland for a cultural adventure with brilliant Food for the Soul host Nina Heyn. Warsaw was celebrating the 19th International Chopin Piano Competition that week, an event only held every five years, bringing with it scores of tourists and up-and-coming talent. In Warsaw, which treasures classical music, where there are churches on every street corner, and which enjoys the third lowest crime rate among Europe’s major cities, it is easy to recognize the signs of high culture.

Over the course of our visit, Nina furnished the rich historical context for us to understand what we were observing. One of our stops included a visit to Warsaw’s Royal Castle—with its Rembrandt portraits, lavish Baroque interior, and impressive collection of firearms and jewelry—but we also learned that monarch after monarch had to grapple with occupying forces. Prussia, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Russia, and the Soviet Union all left their mark on today’s Poland.
