This morning, IMA President and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Joseph Varon spoke with host Jan Jeffcoat on The National Desk about organ donations and what he calls the growing “commodification of human life,” as well as the serious risks that come with inconsistent definitions of brain death.

Dr. Varon says urgent reforms are needed to rebuild public trust and protect patients and families. His recommendations include:

1. A true national standard for determining brain death
2. Transparent, honest informed consent
3. Independent oversight
4. A strict ban on any procurement activity until legal death is independently verified
