The UK government, led by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, is announcing a sweeping overhaul of the asylum system. Under the new proposals, people granted asylum will receive only temporary protection and will have to wait 20 years before they can apply for permanent settlement — up from the current 5‑year path.

The move is part of efforts to reduce small‑boat crossings and asylum claims. Refugee status will be subject to regular review and may be revoked if the country of origin is deemed “safe”.

In this video we break down what the changes mean for asylum seekers, the human rights concerns and what the government intends by modelling its pl ans on systems like that of Denmark.
