Godly men commit to:
1. Overcome lust with faithfulness
Proverbs 6:25–29, 32
By means of a harlot a man is reduced to a crust of bread.
Whoever commits adultery with a woman lacks understanding; he who does so destroys his own soul.
And Matthew 5:27–30
Whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
Instead:
Flee youthful lusts (2 Timothy 2:22).
Flee sexual immorality (1 Corinthians 6:18).
Rejoice with the wife of your youth. Let her breasts satisfy you at all times; and always be enraptured with her love (Proverbs 5:18–19).
2. Overcome laziness with diligence.
Because of laziness the building decays, and through idleness of hands the house leaks (Ecclesiastes 10:18).
A lazy man desires and has nothing; but the soul of the diligent shall be made rich (Proverbs 13:4).
Proverbs 12:24
Because “whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men” (Colossians 3:23).
3. Overcome falsehood with truth
Lying lips are an abomination to the LORD, but those who deal truthfully are His delight (Proverbs 12:22).
Therefore, putting away lying, “Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor” (Ephesians 4:25).
Know the truth. The truth shall make you free (John 8:32).
4. Overcome pride with humility
Pride goes before destruction (Proverbs 29:23).
A man’s pride will bring him low, but the humble in spirit will retain honor (Proverbs 11:2).
What does the Lord require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God? Micah 6:8
By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches and honor and life (Proverbs 22:4).
5. Overcome strife with peace
Foolish and ignorant disputes generate strife (2 Timothy 2:23).
Any fool can start a quarrel (Proverbs 20:3).
But it is honorable for a man to stop striving (Proverbs 20:3).
Therefore stop contention before a quarrel starts (Proverbs 17:14).
Romans 12:18
6. Overcome bitterness with forgiveness
Hebrews 12:15
Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice (Ephesians 4:31).
Instead, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bear with one another; forgive one another (Colossians 3:12–13).
7. Overcome selfishness with love
Where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there (James 3:16).
But let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit... Look out not only for your own interests, but also for others' interests (Philippians 2:3–4).
8. Overcome greed with contentment
Godliness with contentment is great gain...Those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, a snare, and many foolish, harmful lusts. Love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some stray from the faith in their greediness (1 Timothy 6:6-10).
9. Overcome despair with hope
Hope deferred makes the heart sick (Proverbs 13:12) and who can bear a broken spirit? (Proverbs 18:14)
But with Christ as our Rock:
We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; perplexed but not in despair; persecuted but not forsaken; struck down but not destroyed (2 Corinthians 4:8–9).
Hebrews 6:18-19
10. Overcome fear with courage.
The cowardly shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death (Revelation 21:8).
Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go (Joshua 1:9).
God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7).
11. Overcome compromise with conviction
James 4:4
Hebrews 10:23
2 Timothy 1:12
12. Overcome sin with repentance
Your iniquities separate you from God; your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He will not hear (Isaiah 59:2).
But:
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).
Forget those things which are behind. Reach forward to those things ahead. Press toward the goal (Philippians 3:13-15).
With God all things are possible (Matthew 19:26).
