Anthropic is making its biggest US expansion yet, announcing new data center projects in Texas and New York backed by a massive $50 billion in new funding. This immense investment is central to a plan to significantly grow US computing capacity specifically for advanced AI work.
The facilities, scheduled to come online in phases through 2026, are custom-designed for Anthropic’s systems and focus intensely on meeting the substantial power and efficiency demands for training and running large AI models. The company partnered with Fluidstack, selected for its exceptional agility and ability to deliver gigawatts of power rapidly. Fluidstack is known for providing large GPU clusters to major companies like Meta, Midjourney, and Mistral.
This domestic investment is timely, as it supports the goals of the US AI Action Plan—aimed at making "America the world capital in artificial intelligence". Anthropic’s growing US data center footprint positions the firm among the largest builders of physical AI infrastructure in the country, reinforcing the push to keep more AI development rooted domestically.
The project promises substantial economic impact, expected to create about 800 full-time jobs and 2,400 construction jobs. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei noted that this infrastructure is necessary to realize the potential of AI to accelerate scientific discovery and help solve complex problems.
With usage of its AI system, Claude, extending to more than 300,000 business customers and large accounts growing nearly seven times in the past year, this level of spending is vital to support rising demand and maintain research momentum. The aggressive expansion comes amid intense industry competition, particularly from OpenAI (which has secured over $1.4 trillion in long-term commitments). The scale of these industry plans has raised critical questions about whether the US power grid and related industries can support such rapid data center growth. Furthermore, the financing of America's AI infrastructure remains contested, highlighted by recent discussions concerning the broadening of a CHIPS Act tax credit to cover AI data centers and grid equipment.
