Saraya's disappearance during a photo tour in Istanbul captured global attention and involved the intelligence services of both the United States and Turkey. Her body was eventually found near the ancient walls of Sarayburnu, raising numerous questions and conspiracy theories.
Saraya Sierra was born in New York in 1979 to Puerto Rican parents and grew up in a strict evangelical Christian household. Despite her rebellious nature, she respected her parents and adhered to the family’s strict rules. Saraya had a passion for creativity and initially aimed to become a teacher but later developed an interest in psychology and photography.
At 18, Saraya met and married Steven Sierra, with whom she had two children. The family faced financial struggles, moving from New York to Michigan, then California, and back to New York. Saraya found a new passion in photography, joining a New York photography community where she gained recognition for her talent.
In early 2013, Saraya decided to embark on a photo tour to Istanbul, despite concerns from her family. She traveled alone after her friend canceled, and while in Istanbul, she met a local named Taylan, who showed her around the city. Saraya also visited Germany and Austria for scheduled photo shoots before returning to Istanbul for a final few days.
On January 21, 2013, Sarai called her family to confirm her return flight but went missing that day. Her worried family contacted the American Embassy, and a large-scale search began. Investigators discovered her body near the Sarayburnu walls, and it was determined she had been assaulted and murdered.
The investigation led to Talip Sali, a local man with a criminal record, who fled to Syria after the crime. He was later captured trying to re-enter Turkey and confessed to the murder, providing chilling details of the attack.
