“Bamboo and Silence” — A Tribute to Ellen Marks.

This Halloween, instead of haunted houses or ghost stories, I’m taking you on a ride into a real horror story — one that happened right here in Bloomington, Indiana.

In 1986, a woman named Ellen Sears Marks lived in a tiny handmade shack hidden in the bamboo at the end of Summit Street. She lived simply, quietly, and apart from the world — until she was brutally murdered and dismembered by a neighbor just one block away.

I’ve researched her story for years. This time, I’m returning to the very site where it all happened — riding my bicycle through the same streets, through the same silence — to tell Ellen’s story the way it deserves to be told.

This isn’t a ghost tale. It’s something deeper. It’s about loss, loneliness, justice, and the haunting weight of being forgotten.

Join me as we revisit a piece of Bloomington’s dark history — part true crime, part reflection, and all real.
Because sometimes, the scariest stories aren’t the ones we make up…
They’re the ones we left behind.
