X-class flares are the most powerful category (the scale goes A, B, C, M, X, with X being the strongest). An X4.0 is significant but not extreme — for comparison, the Carrington Event in 1859 was estimated at X40+ or higher. This one ranks as the second-strongest flare of 2025 (behind the X5.1 from the same sunspot earlier in the week).
