Hammond Castle in Gloucester, MA, built between 1926 and 1929 as the home, laboratory, and museum of inventor John Hays Hammond Jr., offers a quirky and fascinating peek into the mind of a man who held more than four hundred patents and helped pioneer remote-control technology. The grounds are beautifully maintained—though much smaller than those of Newport’s Breakers—and parking can be a bit limited, often requiring visitors to park on the street. Inside, the castle is packed with an eclectic mix of ancient artifacts Hammond collected from around the world in the early 20th century, making for an intriguing but somewhat eccentric experience. Just be prepared for narrow hallways that aren’t very handicapped accessible. Overall, it’s a unique and worthwhile stop, even if it doesn’t quite capture the grandeur of a true European castle.
