I spoke with Pastor Craig Tyrl of Irvine United Congregational Church (IUCC) and the Director of The Wayward Artist as we discussed Christianity from both liberal and conservative perspectives, as well as the upcoming production of The Christians, presented by The Wayward Artist and hosted by IUCC.

When faith collides with division, The Wayward Artist’s staging of The Christians invites audiences to rethink familiar red-versus-blue assumptions. Under the direction of Craig Tyrl, the creative team brings Lucas Hnath’s powerful drama to life in a way that encourages reflection on belief, doubt, and the pursuit of deeper understanding.

The play follows a megachurch pastor who delivers a transformative sermon that disrupts the foundations of his congregation. As the church community splinters, the story exposes the tensions between long-held convictions, personal loyalties, and differing interpretations of Christian faith. Its exploration of spiritual fracture resonates strongly with both conservative and progressive Christians, offering a grounded look at how communities grapple with profound theological and cultural shifts.
