I watched The Critical Drinker’s video “Crash And Burn – The Amy Schumer Story”, and I’ve got to say—I agree with some of his points. Amy Schumer had an explosive rise in comedy, but it seems the lingering problems aren’t about sexism or discrimination. In this reaction, I unpack why I think she made critical mis-steps: leaning too much on the same jokes, failing to evolve, and then blaming the fall on external forces instead of internal creative weakening.

In this video I cover:

Her early success: stand-up, Inside Amy Schumer, Trainwreck and her moment in the spotlight.

What changed: Audience fatigue with repetitive content, critiques of her material’s freshness and craft.

Her public attribution of her decline to “machismo,” “sexism,” and external blame—why I believe that argument is incomplete and self-serving.

Schumer’s ability to talk frankly about her body, relationships, and modern womanhood resonated. Her early work had bite and novelty. Trainwreck proved she could anchor a successful film and reach mainstream audiences.

As time went on, critics noted her jokes felt repetitive and perhaps less grounded in fresh perspective. The article “The Rise and Fall of Amy Schumer” points to the disparity between her earlier work and later material. Even fans have argued she leaned more into shock/raunch for attention rather than insight.

She has publicly blamed machismo and discrimination for her backlash—indeed sexism exists in comedy. But when you’ve got a large audience, repetitive jokes and weaker execution will generate criticism no matter your gender. Ignoring that to focus only on external factors avoids self-reflection. The Critical Drinker video emphasizes the craft issues and audience fatigue—something she cannot blame entirely on external sexism.

Any comedian or creator needs to evolve their voice. If you rest on past success and expect the same formula to work forever, you set yourself up for decline. Blaming all criticism on external oppression without acknowledging craft, relevance and execution damages your credibility and alienates audiences.
