This demo shows how propanal (propionaldehyde) can be synthesized by oxidizing 1‑propanol with potassium dichromate under acidic conditions, then distilling the aldehyde. Propanal is used in polypropylene plastics found in food packaging, herbicides such as propanil for rice farming, and flavoring agents that give foods their aroma.

Safety note: Potassium dichromate is highly toxic and carcinogenic; this experiment should only be performed in a controlled laboratory with proper PPE and ventilation.
