On December 20, 2017, a breakthrough was announced in the case of Mike Williams, a Tallahassee real estate appraiser who was presumed to have drowned while duck hunting on Lake Seminole in 2000. Contrary to initial beliefs, Mike did not drown or get eaten by alligators; he was murdered. The investigation was largely driven by the relentless efforts of Mike's mother, Cheryl Williams, who never believed her son had drowned and pushed for the truth for 17 years.

Mike's disappearance was initially deemed an accident, but in reality, it was part of a sinister plot by his wife, Denise, and his best friend, Brian Winchester, who were having an affair. Motivated by financial gain from Mike's life insurance policies, they conspired to kill him. Brian eventually confessed to shooting Mike and led authorities to his body in exchange for immunity from prosecution for the murder.

Denise was later arrested and charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and accessory to a felony. In February 2019, she was sentenced to life in prison, though her murder conviction was overturned in 2020, leaving her with a 30-year sentence for conspiracy.

Brian Winchester received a 20-year sentence for the kidnapping of Denise Williams, which ultimately led to his confession and the unraveling of the case.
