I am always surprised to find how few people understood the events that transpired in Libya in 2011 and thereafter. Gaddafi had been criticised by the West throughout his career, but the operation of "Arab Spring" revolts designed by the West to stir up dissent by which American covert actions could be hidden was a fairly abrupt change in strategy. The cause of that change was in fact the announcement by Muamar Gaddafi that Libya was prepared to launch a gold backed banking system by which African nations might be rid of the brutal tactics of the IMF and World Bank. Such a move would have had serious consequences for American corporations who had been robbing African resources for decades. Prosperous Libya had to be crushed and converted to the poorest of nations rather than the opposite.
