Before the flood, the world was not like the one we know today. The early earth was vibrant, lush, and filled with life of unimaginable scale. Genesis tells us that God separated the waters above from the waters below, forming what was called the firmament. This canopy of protection shielded the earth from harmful radiation and created an environment of balance, warmth, and perfect hydration. The oxygen concentration was far higher, the atmospheric pressure greater, and the world itself functioned as a living greenhouse designed for longevity. This is why people like Adam, Methuselah, and Noah lived for hundreds of years. Life thrived, animals grew larger, and humanity was stronger. The ancient world before the flood was a place of beauty and power, yet it was also the setting for one of the darkest chapters in human history.

The creatures that roamed this ancient earth were colossal. What modern scientists call “dinosaurs” were simply called “dragons” throughout most of human history. The word dinosaur was not even coined until 1841 by Richard Owen. Before then, every ancient culture spoke of dragons, and their depictions in art and stone carvings match many of the creatures found in the fossil record. These were not fairy tales; they were eyewitness memories passed down from the earliest civilizations. The same conditions that allowed humans to live longer also allowed creatures to grow to immense size. Giant insects, enormous reptiles, and mammoth beasts all testify to the different world that once was. The protective dome of the firmament maintained a world free of the violent weather and radiation that now limit life expectancy and growth. This is why after the flood, when the firmament collapsed and the balance of creation was broken, everything changed. Lifespans plummeted, the air thinned, and the earth’s environment became harsh. What once flourished to great size began to shrink.
