Map in hand, dust on the tires—come along for a self-drive adventure on Mackay Mine Hill, Idaho. I’m highlighting one stop on the route: the Cossack Tunnel and its old compressor plant. We follow the BLM-published map, roll into the site, and examine the remains, as well as the excellent interpretive signs that bring this mining story to life.

This isn’t a complete route guide—just a focused look at a few locations along the loop, with quick notes on the drive, terrain, and how to explore responsibly. Check current access, carry the essentials, and please leave historic artifacts where they lie.

Download the BLM Map for this self-driving tour and be sure to check it out before your journey!
