Lara Trump accused the media on Fox News Thursday of taking her out of context with her recent remarks on the hardships federal workers are experiencing throughout the government shutdown.

Earlier in the week, the president’s daughter-in-law and 2020 adviser raised eyebrows when she said furloughed workers are going through “a little bit of pain” for the sake of the country’s future. Trump was asked about this in an interview with Fox News’ Harris Faulkner, and she called it a “classic example” of the press’ disingenuousness.

“I’m incredibly empathetic toward anyone right now who is struggling without a paycheck, without several paychecks, who have bills to pay,” Trump said. “For the mainstream media to take one little blurb out of what I said, misconstrue it and misrepresent what I had to say, it’s completely unacceptable. It’s why the president calls the media ‘fake news’ these days. It’s the same thing.”

Trump continued to say that she has “a lot of respect” for unpaid government workers, and that she understands and thanks them for the sacrifices they are currently making throughout the shutdown dispute.
