Bethlehem is the city where the prophet Samuel (his name is GOD) anointed the young David to be king. After Saul had failed to kill King Agag of the Amalekites and died the LORD sent the Prophet Samuel to Bethlehem to anoint the youngest son of Jesse…David 1 SAM 16.
MIC 5:2, “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah (the ancient name for Bethlehem), Though you are little among the thousands of Judah, Yet out of you shall come forth to ME The One to be Ruler in Israel, Whose goings forth are from of old, From everlasting.”
GOD’s dwelling place was to be established as the highest of the mountains. It was a place where GOD’s people are to meet with and worship GOD at HIS temple, to discern HIS ways. The irony here is that Mount Zion (Jerusalem) has become like a valley, and their spiritual sight has become blindness.
In the Babylonian defeat Jerusalem’s leaders will flee and be captured without, in fact the leaders will abandon their city. We get a sense of the kind of leaders and kings Jerusalem had. Zedikiah was a terrible king, and he was the last king of Judah.
Along with Elam, the people of Kir represent the gathering of nations against Jerusalem in the realm of GOD’s judgment.GOD has also taken away the covering of Judah (ISA 22:8). HE has uncovered Judah, stripping away any defenses it had, leaving Judah naked and exposed.
