F. Ammetto and the Orfeo ensemble
Among the prominent figures of the Baroque era, Tomaso Albinoni occupies a special place. A contemporary of Vivaldi and Bach, he created music distinguished by astonishing melodic clarity, structural perfection, and a life-affirming character. A striking example of his work is Concerto No. 1 in D major, Op. 7—a gem of the instrumental repertoire that continues to captivate listeners with its exquisite simplicity.
The twelve concerto cycle "Opus 7," published in 1715, became one of the composer's key creative achievements. These concertos were written for oboe or violin and string orchestra, a groundbreaking achievement for their time. Concerto No. 1 in D major fully reveals Albinoni's characteristic style: luminous, solemn, and built on the contrast between the solo instrument and the ensemble.
The concerto's structure is classic for the Baroque era: four movements alternating between fast and slow tempos (Allegro – Adagio – Allegro – Adagio). The fast movements are striking in their energy and virtuosity, recalling the influence of the Venetian school, while the slow movements, especially the heartfelt Adagio, demonstrate the lyrical depth and vocal expressiveness of the melodies.
The interpretation of the concerto by Italian violinist and conductor Fabio Ammetto and his ensemble "Orfeo" is a benchmark for connoisseurs of authentic performance. The musicians approach the work with a deep understanding of the historical context. They use Baroque instruments or exact replicas of them, allowing them to recreate a timbre palette as close as possible to what Albinoni himself heard.
The performance is distinguished by an impeccable sense of style: clear articulation, dynamic contrasts, elegant ornamentation, and a precise balance between the solo violin and the accompanying group. The Orpheus ensemble doesn't simply play notes; it brings the music to life, imbuing it with breath and emotion, emphasizing both its brilliance and its lyrical melancholy.
This recording is a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of Baroque music, created by one of its most elegant masters, and to appreciate the highest level of contemporary historical performance.
