Louis Ingram, witness for the State in rebuttal, at the Trial of Leo Frank in the Fulton County Superior Court of Atlanta, Georgia, in 1913 (Testimony Portion From July 28 - August 21, 1913; Closing Arguments August 21-25, 1913)
Conductor Louis Ingram of the English Avenue streetcar line testified that on April 26, 1913, he arrived in town on his regular car but could not recall the exact time. He stated that his car had arrived ahead of schedule several times, sometimes by as much as four minutes. Ingram knew motorman W. M. Matthews and had ridden in with him when Matthews’s car was early on multiple occasions.
On cross-examination, Ingram confirmed that company rules prohibited arriving either early or late, and conductors and motormen were punished for both.
This testimony was offered to support the possibility that Mary Phagan’s streetcar (operated by Matthews) could have arrived earlier than scheduled, placing her near the factory closer to noon—consistent with the State’s timeline that she was killed shortly after entering the building.
