Powerful 6.3 quake kills at least 20 in Afghanistan, hundreds injured

A 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck near Mazar-e Sharif in northern Afghanistan early Monday, killing at least 20 people and injuring more than 600, according to Afghan authorities.

The quake, which hit at a depth of 28 kilometers, also damaged the city’s historic Blue Mosque and several nearby buildings.

Rescue teams and local residents worked through rubble to free trapped victims as hospitals were placed on high alert.

Officials said 25 people were seriously injured, and the death toll is expected to rise, Reuters has reported.

The United Nations mission in Afghanistan said it is assisting with emergency response and relief efforts on the ground.
