Luther’s New Religion: How Indulgences Were Only a Pretext

Indulgences weren’t “selling forgiveness.” That’s the myth. We lay out what indulgences actually were — remission of temporal penalties after absolution. From there the real story: Luther’s pivot from critiquing malpractice to denying the pope’s authority, challenging councils, the sacramental system, penance, and finally free will - creating his own religion in the process. Reform efforts were already underway (Lateran V), so the explosion wasn’t about bad fundraising - it was a theological break driven by a shift toward voluntarist/nominalist ideas and “faith alone.”
