On my old tripod, a Victiv VT80, the rotation locking knob for the centre column broke, the tripod worked well enough but was liable to rotate when held at an angle with a heavy camera in place. I was very happy otherwise with that budget tripod that I decided to replace it with another from the same make, the Victiv NT72. As always discounts and deals are available on Amazon, and I finished up paying just £35.99 for it.

In the box I received the 1.6Kg tripod itself, a detachable video head, a mobile phone holder, two Arca Swiss quick release plates and a user guide. Build quality seems OK for the low price. The tripod appears to be well-made, with aluminium alloy legs, and the video head is acceptable but falls short of professional standards. The phone mount is a standard, lightweight plastic, but I doubt I will need to use it

The tripod is made from heavy duty plastic with aluminium alloy braced legs. It extends from a compact 51cm to rather wobbly 182 cm in height with four braced leg extensions secured with quick lock clips - I much prefer clips to any other way of securing the legs as they are speedy in operation with the locked status easily confirmed from a distance. Four extensions give a smaller collapsed size but can make it more unstable when extended. This tripod lacks a crank to elevate the head unit, a great pity, and one reason for this is that the central camera supporting tube, which fits through the apex of the tripod, can be quickly removed for use as an extendible 147cm monopod, a very useful feature for some users, although less so for me. The fully extended tripod is a bit unstable, as to be expected, but I was pleased to see a hanging hook to allow weights to be suspended below the tripod for added stability.

Although a ball and socket head is more suitable for my work and I will be swapping over to one, the 3-way Swivel video head came as a very pleasant surprise as it exceeded my expectations in several respects. It comes with two Arca Swiss mounting plates to which the camera is secured for quick release from the tripod. The camera head is supplied detached from the tripod and can easily be swapped over using the standard ¼" mounting screw. The quick-release mechanism is one of the best and easiest to use I have yet encountered and can be used with one hand. In use, the head is fully adjustable through every plane with a well tempered mechanism and a removable hand grip. The only substantial criticism I have is of the largely plastic construction of the head. Indeed, it was the plastic locking mechanism failing and my subsequent inability to remove the head from the tripod which caused me to dump the earlier tripod.

I would describe this tripod as being a mid range in quality, although budget in price. It is a distinct step up from the lightweight budget rivals but lacks the weight and metal construction needed for professional use.

Nevertheless, this is a well made and cleverly designed tripod/monopod that comes with some useful add-ons, and I think it is rather a good buy for the £39.99 pre discount price.
