For nearly 50 years, the world believed it had moved beyond using energy as a political weapon. The 1973 Arab oil embargo was supposed to be the last time nations could cripple the global economy by controlling energy supply. But today, that illusion is collapsing. Energy has once again become a powerful tool of geopolitical leverage—from U.S. LNG exports and tariffs to tensions over Venezuela’s massive oil reserves.
In this video, we explore how the energy weapon is back, reshaping global politics in the 21st century. From the U.S.-China rivalry over rare earth minerals to Canada’s $6.4 billion investment in critical mineral partnerships, the world is entering a new age of energy-driven power politics. Control over oil, gas, and clean energy materials now defines national strategy—and the race for dominance is accelerating.
We also look at the historical lessons of the 1973 oil embargo, how it created the International Energy Agency (IEA) and led to more resilient markets, and why those safeguards are now failing. The clean energy transition—once seen as freedom from fossil fuel politics—has instead created new dependencies, especially on China, which controls over 70% of the global refining capacity for critical minerals.
🔹 How the U.S. is using energy for strategic influence
🔹 Why Venezuela’s oil reserves matter again
🔹 The rise of critical minerals as the new oil
🔹 Canada’s role in reshaping global supply chains
🔹 China’s dominance in rare earths and clean energy tech
If you want deeper insights, I’ll be publishing an extended analysis on Substack and Patreon—both linked below.
