Why was Halimah Sa'diah given to suckle the Prophet?

In the dry valleys of the Arabian Desert, where poverty and drought weighed heavily on the hearts of many, Allah prepared a miracle that would change one woman's life forever. Among the women of the Banu Sa'd tribe was Halimah Sa'diah, a meek and sincere woman who longed for a child to suckle. She never imagined that the child she would hold in her arms that day would be the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Yet, from the moment she held him, blessings showered down on her home, her heart, and her entire tribe - signs of divine mercy surrounding the chosen one.

It was customary among the Arabs of Mecca to entrust their newborn babies to wet nurses from the desert tribes. This tradition ensured that the children grew strong and learned the pure Arabic language, away from the diseases and noise of the city. When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was born, the women of the Banu Sa’d tribe came to Mecca to breastfeed their newborn babies. Among them was Halimah Sa’diyah, who was traveling with her husband, Al-Harith, and her weak donkey. Her she-camel had not given milk, and her baby was crying from hunger. Their journey was slow and full of hardships.

As Halimah later recalled, every woman who came to Amina refused to take her son, because he was an orphan. Each one looked for a child whose father could generously reward him. But Allah had chosen Halimah for a greater honor. When no one else accepted him, Halimah said to her husband, “Let us take this orphan child, perhaps Allah will bless us through him.” And indeed, blessings descended when she took him in her arms.

As soon as she picked up the baby Muhammad, her heart was filled with peace. Her breasts, which had been dry for many days, were filled with milk, which fed both the blessed one and her own child with complete satisfaction. Her husband’s old she-camel, which had once been barren, produced a lot of milk that night. On the return journey across the desert, their weak donkey outran the rest, surprising the women who had left it behind. Halimah said, “By Allah, this child is full of blessings.”

When they reached the tribe of Banu Sa’d, their barren land became green and their animals began to produce abundant milk, while the herds of the rest of the tribe remained dry. The people said, “Let your animals graze where Halimah’s animals graze!” Such was the outward miracle that occurred in the presence of the Holy Prophet even in his childhood.

This was a sign that Allah’s mercy follows His beloved wherever he goes. The Quran confirms this divine truth in Surah Al-Anbiya verse 107.

“And We have sent you, O Muhammad, as a mercy to all the worlds.”

The Prophet’s mercy was not limited to humans, but extended to animals, nature, and all creation.

Overwhelmed by the blessings, Halimah (may Allah be pleased with her) and her husband begged Amina (may Allah be pleased with her) to allow them to keep the child for a longer period of time. Amina agreed, and the young Muhammad (may Allah be pleased with him) grew up under the vast desert sky, surrounded by love, simplicity, and faith. Halimah (may Allah be pleased with her) later said that there was no child better than him.

When the Messenger of Allah (may Allah be pleased with him) smiled, light began to shine around him. Even in his childhood, he brought harmony to hearts and prosperity to homes. His presence was a sign that Allah had sent His most beloved to illuminate the world. The story of Halimah (may Allah be pleased with her) reminds us that those who serve and love the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) are given unimaginable blessings in return.

Years later, when Halimah (may Allah be pleased with her) came to Medina after the migration of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), he welcomed her with warmth and love. He spread out his cloak for her to sit on and honored her as if she were his own mother. Her life had changed the day he held her, and so had the world. The story of Halimah Sa’diya (may Allah be pleased with her) is not just a story of the past, but it is a lesson that whoever has the love of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in his heart, Allah Almighty grants them comfort, sustenance and light. Because in His presence, everything barren blossoms with life and mercy.
