Chapter Summary and Overview:

Revelation 8 summarizes the opening of the seventh seal, which leads to seven trumpets being sounded by angels, bringing devastating judgments upon the earth. The first four trumpets cause widespread destruction to the land, sea, and atmosphere, including fires, blood-filled waters, poisoned rivers, and darkened celestial bodies. Before the trumpets begin, an angel offers the prayers of the saints to God and then throws fire from the altar to the earth, causing a massive earthquake and a prelude to the coming judgments.

The prelude and first four trumpets

Seventh Seal and Prelude:

After Jesus opens the seventh seal, there is a half-hour silence in heaven. An angel offers the prayers of the saints with incense and then throws fire from the altar to the earth, causing storms and an earthquake.

First Trumpet:

Hail, fire, and blood rain down, burning a third of the earth, trees, and grass.

Second Trumpet:

A massive, burning mountain is thrown into the sea, turning a third of it into blood, killing a third of sea life, and destroying a third of ships.

Third Trumpet:

A great star named Wormwood falls from heaven, poisoning a third of the fresh water sources and causing many deaths.

Fourth Trumpet:

A third of the sun, moon, and stars are struck, causing darkness that affects a third of the day and night.

Warning of further judgment

After the fourth trumpet, an eagle flies through the sky proclaiming "Woe, woe, woe" to the inhabitants of the earth because of the three remaining trumpet blasts, which are described as even more severe.
