Tom Cotton: “We Need 5 More Democrats to Come to Their Senses and Open the Government”

Republican Senator Tom Cotton has strongly criticized the Democrats’ approach to the current partial government shutdown, emphasizing that the solution does not lie in eliminating the filibuster. “No, Harris, we are not going to eliminate the filibuster for a short-term funding bill. Frankly, we are not going to eliminate it for anything in this Congress,” Cotton said during a recent Senate debate.

According to Cotton, Democrats have long sought to remove this historic tool, which has allowed consensus and compromise in a large and diverse country. He warned that the real motive would be to consolidate power in Washington, including proposals like making Washington D.C. a state with two permanent senators, packing the Supreme Court, and imposing state laws like those of California nationwide.

“The filibuster has existed for over 200 years to ensure consensus and that all voices are heard,” Cotton stated. He reiterated that there is no need to abolish it, and that the true solution is for five more Democrats to come around and vote to fund the government immediately.

Cotton cautioned that eliminating the filibuster would have long-lasting consequences, leaving the Senate without supermajority protections and allowing the ruling party to impose structural changes without accountability. “Democrats need to come to their senses and give a few more votes to open the government,” he concluded, stressing that the right path is compromise, not institutional breakdown.
