The composition originated from a jam session at Headley Grange in 1973, when John Paul Jones was late, and Page and Bonham developed the foundational riff and rhythm together.
Page used a custom guitar tuning of D–A–D–G–A–D, and the song features a complex interplay of triple and quadruple meters, with the guitar riff in triple time and the vocals in quadruple time.
