🤥 Trump threatens military action in Nigeria: is it about terror or tech minerals?

🔴 Trump has threatened to “go into” Nigeria “guns-a-blazing” to “wipe out the Islamic Terrorists who are committing…horrible atrocities” against Nigeria’s Christians, instructing the Pentagon “to prepare for possible action” and saying a US attack would be “fast, vicious and sweet.”

🔴 Taken at face value, Trump’s pledge might sound commendable -taking a stand against Boko Haram jihadists who have long terrorized the West African nation’s Christians, who make up roughly half of the population.

🔴 But Boko Haram has been around since 2002, and Nigeria has struggled with ethno-religious unrest going back to independence from Britain in 1960. Historians have accused London of using the same divide and rule tactics in Nigeria as they did in the Indian subcontinent, Palestine and elsewhere, setting the country up to fail from the start.

🇳🇬 In other words, sectarian violence is nothing new for Nigeria.

🔴 Timing is everything

👉 What is new is that Trump’s tariffs wars have put the US and China in a race for the world’s tech minerals. Nigeria happens to be home to untold energy and mineral wealth, including:

♦️ ~37B+ barrels of oil = $3T+

♦️ ~210T+ cubic feet of gas = $1T+

♦️ ~42B tons of bitumen = ~$500B+ (second-largest reserves in the world)

♦️ ~3B tons of iron ore = $300B+

♦️ ~1-2B tons of bauxite (at least $100B+)

♦️ Lithium (major deposits found in 2018 and 2022 – two Chinese-backed processing plants opened this year)

♦️ Zinc, lead, copper, tin, gold and gemstones worth hundreds of billions more

📌 In late September, liberal internationalist Washington think tank the Brookings Institute issued a report urging African nations to secure a place in the supply of critical minerals to the US, with Nigeria popping up repeatedly as a source of minerals like beryllium, fluorspar, zircon, tin and zinc, and praised for “substantial progress” in governance reforms.

🤔 A month later, the president is talking about military action. Coincidence?
