My first visit to Hinsdale county with the majestic "North Clear Creek Falls" and the strange "Slumgullion Earthflow", a river of rock, water, and soil that flows in slow motion (about 20 feet every year). Other than a brief pause 300 years ago, this flow has been moving continuously for 700 years!! The trees that ride this rock river are constantly disturbed and tilted, so they grow into weird wavy shapes and cris cross each other. The Earthflow is one of the largest and best examples on the planet, of a process called "mass wasting". The flow consistently gets more material from the crumbling headwall at the top of the mountain along with water from rain and melting snow.
