Grace on one Leg

Tanya sat by the window of her small apartment near 149th Street, rocking her newborn with one arm. Her other leg ached from standing too long the night before—the one she still had. Two years earlier, an accident had taken her other leg.

Every day was a battle—diapers, doctor visits, formula—all without help, SNAP, or family nearby. Yet her heart refused to be empty. She whispered to God, “Lord, I don’t understand why You trust me with so much pain… but I’m still here.”

Some days she crawled to reach what she needed; other days she laughed to keep from crying. When neighbors passed, she smiled and waved, hiding the struggle inside.

One afternoon, a knock at the door: an older woman from the next building held two bags of groceries. “God told me to bring this,” she said. Tanya cried—not for the food, but for the reminder that she wasn’t forgotten.

That night, as she fed her baby, Tanya prayed—not for money or help this time, but for strength to keep loving through every hardship. She whispered, “If I can love her through this, maybe I’ll show the world what faith really means.”

And in that moment, Heaven listened.
