What is Hell? Is Hell a Real Place?

Few topics are more misunderstood—than the subject of hell. This confusion stems not from scripture, but from the English language.

Most, when trying to comprehend hell tend to imagine a singular place.
A fiery underworld of punishment for the wicked, ruled by demons and lasting forever.

But the original languages of the Bible—Hebrew and Greek—paint a far more nuanced picture. The reality is, the word “hell” doesn’t exist in the original Hebrew or Greek manuscripts at all. Instead, we find 3 distinct words each with their own history, meaning and theological weight: Sheol, Tartarus and Gehenna. These are not different levels of punishment for humans. They are 3 different locations in the underworld.
