Trump, Xi Jinping Discuss US-China Tariff Tensions, Rare Earth Trade Curbs

US President Donald Trump and China’s Xi Jinping met for the first time in six years, holding 100 minutes of high-level talks on the sidelines of the APEC Summit in South Korea. Trump called the meeting a "great success," praising Xi as a "tremendous leader." The two agreed on multiple trade measures, including a one-year deal to ensure rare earth supplies and a 10 per cent cut in fentanyl-related tariffs. China, in turn, will purchase "tremendous amounts" of US soybeans and other farm goods. Xi confirmed a "consensus" had been reached on key economic issues. The leaders also pledged to cooperate on ending the war in Ukraine, while notably avoiding discussion of Taiwan. Trump said the meeting proves Washington and Beijing "can still do business."
