Sean Grayson found guilty of murder in the death of Sonya Massey

Former Illinois sheriff’s deputy Sean Grayson was convicted of second-degree murder for the 2024 killing of Sonya Massey, a Black mother who had called 911 about a possible prowler.

The jury deliberated nearly 12 hours, ultimately rejecting the first-degree murder charge, though Massey’s family and civil attorneys called the verdict a partial measure of justice.

Body camera footage showed Massey complying with deputies before being shot, while Grayson claimed he feared she would throw boiling water on him, NBC News has reported.

Grayson faces four to 20 years in prison, with the case prompting nationwide scrutiny of law enforcement shootings and leading to Illinois passing the Sonya Massey Act to tighten police hiring standards.
