If you're an orchid beginner or a grower looking to step into the exciting world of species orchids, this is the guide you need! Many people are intimidated by species, thinking they are weak growers, but I’m here to show you a powerful secret: Root Growth is the Key to Success!
I'm sharing my highly recommended list of orchid species and genera that are guaranteed to have vigorous root systems, making them incredibly robust and forgiving—totally going against the grain of typical species culture.
The Root Superstars: Orchid Species with INSANE Root Growth
Forget dainty roots! These plants are root monsters that will give you the confidence to expand your collection:
Ansellia (Trash Bag Orchids): Learn why this genus is famous for not dumping older roots, branching profusely, and growing a "trash-catching" aerial root network. They turn into specimen orchids fast!
Bletilla (Ground Orchids): The best choice for ground culture! See how this genus becomes pot bound quickly with an explosion of roots, staying viable for two years.
Catasetinae: A fun-to-grow genus known for an incredible number of roots from a single new growth, regardless of your cultivation style.
Cattleya bicolor: A bifoliate species that breaks the mold by holding onto and branching its older roots for 3 years or more—an abundance of roots for a beautiful, fragrant species!
Cattleya maxima & Cattleya purpurata: These popular species are rewarding for two reasons: beautiful blooms, and they offer a rare double flush of roots per growth, alongside incredible branching.
Coelogyne pandurata: This Coelogyne species gets "angry" (in a good way!) when its roots are messed with during repotting, leading to explosive new growth and branching.
Cymbidium: The ultimate chubby root grower! Learn a top tip for choosing a deep pot so you can enjoy years of growth without needing to untangle their massive, tightly-packed root ball.
Dendrobium aphyllum & bensoniae: Discover how these mounted species will outgrow any mount you give them, with old, dry-looking roots coming back to life and branching profusely!
Phalaenopsis pulchra: I show you the incredible, start-stop root growth and branching of this species, proving that not all Phalaenopsis are stingy root growers—perfect for mounting!
Rhyncholaelia digbyana: A must-have species that requires a substantial root system to support its legendary fragrant blooms. It delivers with a double root flush and a wonderful, upright growth habit.
Maxillaria (tenuifolia & variabilis): These are rhizome-walking, pot-bulging root growers that defy a dry climate!
Bonus Tip: I reveal the one species genus I shy away from because it is the stingiest root grower of all... Brassavola! Check the comments to chat about why!
