Titanic (1943) A Movie Review
This is Eagle Pax Max. Today, I am doing a movie review of the 1943 Titanic movie made during World War Two by the German Reich. The film was directed by Herbert Selpin, but during production of the film he was arrested after making disparaging comments about the German army and the war in the east. He was found hanged in his jail cell. The film was completed by Werner Klingler who was not credited in the credits for the film. The film had a first run in German Occupied territories, but not in Germany proper. Dr. Goebbels banned the film because he felt it would be bad for morale, especially with scenes of panic during a time of war. There was no second run of the film, and the film was never shown in National Socialist Germany
I watched the movie just before making this review. It has been ten years since I last saw it, so I figured now would be a good time to watch it. I liked the movie, and the fact that this was made by the very based National Socialist Germans made me have some sympathy for the film. I liked the characters, and their acting, and there were a few lines in the movie that you swear they could have been said by our guys making comments on a based live stream. There were a few inaccuracies in the film, the stair case by the main dining room was a little too big. In a telegraph message, the ship is referred to as the SS Titanic, when in reality it was the RMS Titanic, and there was a scene after the iceberg hit where the steerage class passengers go up to the more wealthy part of the ship as a mob to tell them there is a problem, when in reality they would have been confined to their section of the ship. Movie was well done, and it did portray the British capitalists as greedy and unsympathetic and rightfully so. I also noticed that in this movie, there were a lot of ideas that James Cameron probably got inspired by if not outright borrowed for his 1997 Titanic film, including reference to a Blue Diamond being stolen, to confined prisoners having to be rescued in a room with water coming in and the person who rescues them uses an ax to break them out much the way Rose in the 1997 Titanic saves Jack. Peterson was a fictional German officer in the movie who keeps on trying to warn people about the danger, and he is a good heroic character. Overall, I liked the film, and in researching this movie, I found out that the film A Night to Remember made by the British in the 1950’s took a few clips from this movie and pasted them into their own. The movie was as previously mentioned only shown in German Occupied Territories outside of Germany, but in Germany Dr. Goebbels felt it would cause panic so it was banned in Germany and it did not get a second run. An amazing film, but I don’t blame Dr. Goebbels, the last thing you need is a movie like this being seen by a population being murdered, and harassed by allied bombing in real time. Great movie, I highly recommend it to anyone. Eagle Pax Max Over and Out.
